Designer Spotlight: Dida Ritchie
Today we chat to Dida from Dida Ritchie. The Dida Ritchie brand, founded by Dida, was inspired by a summer working on the stunning island of Mallorca and a desire to create a contemporary range of designer espadrilles at affordable prices.
Having been influenced by Spanish style, Dida has designed a collection in specially selected suede that can be worn comfortably and fashionably from day to night, city to beach. Bridging the gap between the high street and prestige designer labels, Dida's range of espadrilles come in three styles, the 'Luna', the 'Renata' and the 'Sofia'.
When did you launch Dida Ritchie and how would your describe your style?
I launched Dida Ritchie in 2018 inspired by Spanish culture. In terms of the shape of the shoes, I try to keep them pretty classic as I want them to be pieces you can keep in your wardrobe and take out year after year. And then when it comes to the colours, I take inspiration from all sorts of places but I would say I draw a lot from nature.
What is the best advice you have been given when launching your brand?
To go for it! You'll never regret trying but they'll always be that 'what if' if you don't. It's fair to say it's been a rollercoaster ride but I have learnt and am still learning so much so I am so glad I took the leap and went for it.
Who is your muse and why?
Jeanne Damas. She has this effortless style yet always looks pulled together and chic.
How much do you factor the sustainability of a product when designing it?
It's a huge factor. First and foremost I design pieces that are timeless so you can keep them in your wardrobe for years and wear with so many different outfits. Then when it comes to the materials used, all my shoes have suede/leather uppers, and all the leather is bought from Spanish suppliers and are tanned in Spain so the tanneries follow European regulations to make sure there is as little effect on the environment as possible. And then the sole is made from jute which is a sustainable material and again they are produced in Spain. As a small business it is something that is constantly evolving and something I will continue to work hard on to improve.
Where are your shoes made?
They are made in Spain - home of espadrilles!
What are your 3 favourite products on The Sample Room?
This is a hard one as I like so many of the items but I would say:
The Jessica Russell Flint smock dress as I love the print and the ruffle detail and would just feel a million dollars in it
The Kapara Olivia dress as I love the colour and it gives me all the holiday vibes

The Madeleine Thompson rainbow pants because I can't resist some comfy cashmere and love the rainbow ankle cuff

Anywhere hot with a beach!
